Mission Mausam: A Transformative Initiative To Boost India’s Weather Research

Date:

India with its geography and large population is susceptible to climate risks and extreme weather conditions. Recently, cities across India have witnessed prolonged heat waves, torrential rains leading to floods and landslides, and persisting drought. Adverse weather conditions are becoming the new normal.

Acknowledging the risks that come with climate change, the government has approved ‘Mission Mausam’. This is a multi-faceted and transformative initiative to enhance India’s weather and climate-related science, research, and services. Mission Mausam will better equip stakeholders to tackle extreme weather events and the impacts of climate change.

This will broaden capacity and resilience across communities, sectors, and ecosystems.

Mission Mausam Will Help India Prepare For Extreme Weather

According to a statement by the Union Cabinet, India will expound research and development, capacity in atmospheric sciences, especially weather surveillance, modeling, forecasting, and management.

Mission Mausaum will integrate advanced observation systems, high-performance computing, and cutting-edge technologies like AI and machine learning to set a new benchmark for predicting weather and high precision.

It will improve observations and understanding to provide highly accurate and timely weather and climate information across temporal and spatial scales.

Some of the critical elements of Mission Mausam include the deployment of next-generation radars and satellite systems with advanced sensors, high-performance supercomputers, and the development of improved Earth systems, as well as a GIS-based automated Decision Support System for real-time data dissemination.

Moreover, Mission Mausam will benefit numerous sectors like agriculture, disaster management, defense, environment, aviation, water resources, power, tourism, shipping, transform, energy, and health.

This is much needed as climate change and extreme weather conditions pose unprecedented challenges to humans and the ecosystem (man-made and natural).
