What’s At Stake and What It Costs for Narendra Modi-led BJP

Meanwhile, word is that it won’t be an easy and smooth process for the BJP. Chandrababu Naidu, president of the Telugu Desam Party, is looking for special status for Andhra Pradesh. Naidu is set to make the Special Category Status (SCS) demand for his state.

JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar is keen on Bihar being acknowledged with a special package and recognized  with two ministerial portfolios for the party, which would much likely be Railways, Rural Development and Jal Shakti ministries. JD(U) is confident that the BJP will accept its conditions as the latter needs to form the government at the center.

Moreover, a JD(U) leader said they want their MPs to take up departments that can help develop Bihar. They pointed out that Jal Shakti is crucial as the state is facing a water crisis amidst receding water table and flooding. The JD(U) leader said they want the Rural Development ministry portfolio as it could boost rural infrastructure and the state’s economy, while Railways is a matter of pride for Bihar.

Nitish Kumar Seeks Special Status for Bihar

After being shunned by the Modi-led government in 2015 for special category status for Bihar, Nitish Kumar is adamant that this time, JD(U) will nail it for the state. The then Union Minister of State for Planning Rao Inderjit Singh had said there is no proposal to grant special status to any state, no proposal to give special package.

A dejected Kumar said the JD(U) would continue to play the audio recording of Modi’s election speech promise of special category status and special package for Bihar when a BJP-led government comes to the Center.

It should be noted that in 2015, the BJP government had said there was no proposal in place for special status to be given to Bihar and in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, it rejected Nitish Kumar’s demand of four Cabinet seats This time around, the BJP has to give in to JD(U)’s demands.
