From Syria To Yemen, Ukraine To Gaza: Can US Stop The Wars?. As Israel continues to pound Gaza, the United States is pushing more firepower and military hardware into the Middle East. The Biden administration also confirmed the resumption of sales of weapons to Saudi Arabia. And since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the US has provided more than $55.4 billion in military assistance to Kyiv.

Civilians, especially women and children are bearing the brunt of conflicts and wars in Gaza, Yemen, and Syria. On one side the US is promoting stability and calling for peace, but on the other hand, it’s fueling instability and intensifying wars with weapons and military funds. What is the American policy – to help end wars or roll it into decades?

The US has failed to offer diplomatic strategy to end the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. With the Ukraine war nearly rolling into its third year, and the Gaza mark set to mark one year of ongoing genocide, there are no signs of peace talks and the American administration putting its foot down and saying enough.

Both wars are steadily evolving into a long, grinding conflict. The US has been trying to avoid direct confrontation with Russia and Iran.

Role Of United States

The Biden administration has continued with its rhetoric that Russia’s Vladimir Putin and the Iranian regime are the embodiment of evil, blaming Moscow and Tehran for the wars. Washington recently told the New York Times that Iran was flooding the West Bank with weapons to spread unrest. But the US continues to help Israel shell Gaza.

But Iran is only helping Gaza and the broader Palestine resist Israeli occupation. This is legitimate and legal. Tehran is helping a beleaguered population. As such, Iran is not in the wrong.

US is in the wrong as it is helping Israel continue with its illegal occupation of Gaza and plans to seize Palestine for the so-called ‘Holy Land’, the biblical land. The US has fuelled a holy war in Gaza, that has inflamed Islamophobia and anti-semitism.

However, the West has been dodging dialogue and peace talks with Russia, to prolong the war at Ukraine’s cost. The Biden administration says the onus of diplomacy is on Ukraine. It’s Ukraine’s call.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not want to sit and talk it out with Russia. He continues to war, believing a military defeat for the Kremlin will get it off. Ukrainian-led peace summits have been held without the inclusion or presence of Russian leaders.

As for Ukraine, if the West (the US and Europe) wanted to, they could have ended the Ukraine war in just a matter of a few months. But it has dragged on for nearly three years. There’s no strategy. Mark Galeotti, the Russian analyst, said “the gap between rhetoric and reality in the West is dangerous, and risks establishing unrealistic expectations”.

He believes that if the West indeed comes up with some sort of a deal to end the Ukraine war, it could trade some Ukrainian territory and neutrality, and for Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.

If the West intends to end the Ukraine war, it can lift sanctions on Russia and have the Kremlin sign a peace deal with Kyiv. The same is true for Gaza. The US can pull back Israel and churn out a ceasefire deal and peace talks, instead of fueling the war with more weapons.
