Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of a stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship in his interaction with President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima. He said China is ready to engage, expand cooperation, and manage differences with the United States.
The latest meeting between Xi and Biden comes a year after their summit in San Francisco. The Chinese President acknowledged Donald Trump’s win in the 2024 US Presidential Election, saying China’s goal of a stable and healthy relationship with the United States remains unchanged. Xi highlighted that if the two countries take each other as rivals or adversaries and pursue vicious competition, they would only hurt each other.
He said China is ready to work with the new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation, and manage Xi believes cooperation is crucial for economy, trade, agriculture, counternarcotics, law enforcement, public health, and global challenges like climate change and artificial intelligence.
He added that China and US should get along with each other, realize long-term peaceful coexistence, and inject more certainty and positive energy into the world.

China Wants US to Stay Out of Taiwan
Xi told the US not to get involved in bilateral disputes over the islands and reefs of Nansha Qundao, and not make provocations. The Chinese president said Beijing upholds its territory, sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea. Xi stressed that dialogue and consultation between the concerned states can manage their differences.
The Chinese president highlighted that Taiwan independence separatist activities are as irreconcilable. He reiterated that if the US wants to maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait, it should understand the true nature of Lai Ching-te and the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in seeking Taiwan independence, handle ‘Taiwan’ with extra prudence, unequivocally oppose Taiwan independence and support China’s peaceful reunification.
