Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has created division in the Democrats after she blamed US President Joe Biden for their unprecedented loss in the 2024 US Presidential Election to Donald Trump. She told the New York Times that it would have been different if Biden had dropped out earlier.

Pelosi believes if President Biden had gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the presidential race. However, her comments haven’t gone down well with some Democrats who believe it’s time for the former speaker to retire.

A House Democrat acknowledged that it may be a difficult time for Pelosi not being the leader, adding that she needs to understand her new role.

Nancy Pelosi played a significant role in pushing Joe Biden out of the 2024 Presidential race. After Democrats suffered a loss to the Republicans, she said they had been waiting for Biden to step down and there would have been an open primary. Pelosi highlighted that Kamala Harris would have done well in the primary process and it would have made her stronger going forward. But that didn’t happen.

What Led to Democrat’s Downfall?

While some lawmakers and Democrat supporters blame Biden, others blame the campaign and the mindset of the voters. Anne-Marie Slaughter, CEO of New America, said Kamala Harris lost because the United States is not ready for a woman president – at least not a Democratic woman president.

It should be noted that Vice President Harris was leading the national polls through September, but lost in the end. Some supporters say Kamala Harris didn’t lose the election because she’s a woman, but she was put into a position to lose the election because she was a woman.

Moreover, celebrity endorsement for Harris’ didn’t work out. Voters didn’t find it convincing. David Jackson, a political scientist, said celebrity campaigns might motivate those who are already partisan, but they do very little persuading. And voters didn’t find it credible.
