Devastating floods are taking a toll on Bangladesh which has already been troubled by civil protests and political instability. India has been closely watching the happenings in the neighbouring country and has even given support.
But Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general, has blamed India for the floods. He rebuked New Delhi for its policy of sharing water from the rivers with Bangladesh.
Mirza alleged that India opened its dams without any prior notice, resulting in Bangladesh floods. He said they are witnessing severe floods not seen in the last 15 years.
The BNP leader highlighted that the bilateral contract of sharing transboundary river water has not been established. Fakhrul went on to accuse India of using water aggression as a weapon. Moreover, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General, called for the cancellation of secret and unequal agreements signed with India under the previous Sheikh Hasina-led government. He said it compromised Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.

Sheikh Hasina Plotting Deep Conspiracy Against Bangladesh
With the interim government headed by Dr Muhammad Yunus leading Bangladesh towards stability, BNP alleged former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of plotting a deep conspiracy against the country. Fakhrul pointed out that Hasina, over the last 15 years, tried to establish a one-party rule.
He believes the Awami League chief followed her father Sheikh Mujib’s footsteps for a one-party system. However, Hasina failed as hundreds of thousands of students stood up against her authoritarian regime and demanded democracy.
The BNP leader said they would give the interim government sufficient time to implement the much-needed reforms. But there is no indefinite time.
