Delhi Airport Terminal-1 Roof Collapses Due To Heavy Rainfall, 1 Dead, 5 Injured, Departure Operations Suspended

Delhi Airport Terminal-1 Roof Collapses Due To Heavy Rainfall, 1 Dead, 5 Injured, Departure Operations Suspended. Operations at Delhi Airport have stopped after the Terminal-1 roof collapsed early Friday morning due to incessant heavy rainfall.

The incident resulted in the death of one person and injured several others. Many vehicles have been damaged. All departures from T1, only domestic flight operations, have been suspended until further notice.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu tweeted that he is personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport. He highlighted that first responders are working and affected passengers are being assisted by the respective airlines. “The injured have been evacuated to hospital and rescue operations are still ongoing.”

A Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) spokesperson said a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 a.m. due to heavy rain. He said they recorded injuries and emergency personnel provided all necessary assistance and medical aid to the affected.

“All departures from Terminal-1 are temporarily suspended and check-in counters are closed as a safety measure,” the spokesperson said. “We sincerely regret this disruption and apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

Meanwhile, IndiGo has cancelled flights in Delhi as passengers are not able to enter the terminal. The airline in an official statement said passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their respective flights, but those with flights later in the day will be offered alternatives.

It regretted the incident saying it has resulted in operations being affected. “Customers are advised to keep track of and confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport.”
