Chennai is hosting a significant political gathering of its kind, a high-profile meeting, to advocate for Fair Delimitation. Led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, the Joint Action Committee for Fair Delimitation meeting drew Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, and Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, among others.
They deliberated on concerns regarding the 2026 delimitation process which will redefine parliamentary constituencies based on population figures. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party intends to reshape political boundaries.
Stalin said states have contributed to India’s development and have come together to safeguard its federal structure by ensuring delimitation. He highlighted that the delimitation of constituencies should not happen as per the current population. “We all should be firm in opposing it. With the decrease in the people’s representatives in Parliament, our strength to express our views will decrease.”
He stressed that it is not about the number of seats, but about their authority, their rights, and their future. Stalin said that only if the autonomy of the states is ensured, federalism will prevail in India. Touching on the past, he said whenever there were threats, democratic forces stepped in to prevent them.

Delimitation Will Weaken Tamil Nadu Politically

The DMK president asserted that decreasing representations will result in states’ struggle to get their due funds from the center, unwanted laws will be passed and decisions will be taken by those who don’t understand the people.
Stalin said women’s empowerment would suffer a setback, students would lose opportunities, and farmers would lose their support. “Our culture, identity, progress will be hit, social justice will be crippled and SC/ST communities will be affected.” The Tamil Nadu CM said the state and its people will be weakened politically.
He highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in 2023 that if delimitation happened based on population, southern states would lose about 100 seats. Stalin said despite this, the Centre continued to push for delimitation. He emphasized that leaders present in the meeting should not let their parliamentary representations decrease.
