Preparations are underway in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir, for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the ambitious Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project on April 19. The 272-km stretch, which includes a 119-km tunnel, is a key development for J&K’s connectivity.
Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity at the Railway Board, said the Udhampur-Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link is very important for Kashmir’s religious, tourism, and connectivity needs. He highlighted that PM Modi is going to dedicate this entire project to the country. Kumar shared that on the day of the inauguration, two Vande Bharat Express trains will begin service, one running from Srinagar and the other from Katra to Srinagar.
Himanshu Shekhar Upadyay, the Northern Railways CRPO, said they haven’t received any official information about the Udhampur-Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link, but are prepared to hold the inauguration safely. He said the rail link will provide cheaper and more reliable all-weather connectivity to the people of the country, and the valley which will boost tourist influx.”

Indian Railways conducted the trial run of the first Vande Bharat train from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station to the Srinagar railway station on January 23, 2025. The train will run through the Anji Khad Bridge – India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, and Chenab Bridge, which is the highest railway bridge in the world.
