Engineer turned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was recently detained by Delhi police at the Singhu border, has been released and allowed to protest at Jantar Mantar today. His detention came amid his month-long padayatra from Ladakh with supporters from Leh and demands for statehood and the Sixth Schedule for Ladakh.

After his release, Wangchuk said they faced some difficulties in Delhi but is positive that their concerns will be addressed by the government. He highlighted that their message of environmental conservation reached more people.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to the government. They urged protection for Ladakh under constitutional provisions to safeguard the Himalayas.

Sonam Wangchuk led the march which began on September 1. The climate activist has put forth a four-point agenda to the government. He called for statehood, inclusion under the Indian Constitution’s Sixth Schedule, a dedicated public service commission (PSC) with an enhanced recruitment process, and Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil.

Wangchuk, 58, pointed out that Schedule 6 of the Indian Constitution, for Ladakh, offers protection to tribal and local people. It gives them authority over the management and governance of the region.

Wangchuk shared that he has been assured by the Home Ministry that he would meet either the PM Narendra Modi or the Home Minister Amit Shah. “I have called for the restoration of democracy through statehood and the implementation of Schedule 6,” he said.
