UP, Odisha and Jharkhand Will Have Extended Heatwaves This Summer, Above-Normal Temperatures: IMD

Central and eastern India, especially Odisha, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, will have extended heatwaves that may last 10 to 11 days, says the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It has forecast above-normal temperatures in most parts of the country this summer April to June.

The IMD said abovethat normal temperatures are likely to be recorded over most parts of the country, except the west peninsular India and some parts of east-central and east India. Mryutyunjay Mohapatra, IMD Director General, highlighted that Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and northern parts of Karnataka will witness above-normal heatwave days.

He said the heatwaves are likely to last four to seven days. However, heat episodes can last up to 11 days, especially over Odisha, Jharkhand, and east Uttar Pradesh.

Warmer Summer Due To Heatwaves 2025

Summer will start with a warm note in Gujarat, Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and southern Madhya Pradesh. Day temperatures in these Indian states will remain exceptionally above normal in April and nights will remain warmer than usual over the entire country, excluding J&K, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Northeast India.

All-India temperatures remained within normal or below-normal range this March, except for parts of central and southern India. Parts of Gujarat and Odisha, and some pockets of Vidarbha in Maharashtra witnessed above-normal heatwaves three to five days.

IMD said with the continuing La Nina conditions over the equatorial Pacific Ocean, there will be no El Nino conditions during the Monsoon season this year. Mohapatra pointed out that the sea surface temperatures will remain close to normal. “During the summer season, the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions will continue to remain neutral and it will remain neutral or turn into the negative phase during the Monsoon.”
