141 Opposition MPs SUSPENDED: BJP Hiding Something?

A total of 141 oppositions MPs have been suspended from the parliaments winter session on contentious bills for applying continuous pressure on PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah , on the breach of Parliament security last week.

141 Opposition MPs SUSPENDED: BJP Hiding Something? Was the suspension of 141 opposition parliament members necessary? Why BJP doesn’t want to debate Contentious Bills?

Forty-nine more opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) have been suspended from the legislature on Tuesday a day after suspension of 78 opposition for allegedly disrupting House proceedings, despite their request for a debate on a December 13 parliament security breach.
Since December 14, 141 lawmakers have been suspended altogether, including 95 from the Lower House (Lok Sabha) and 46 from the Upper chamber (Rajya Sabha).

What led to 141 opposition MPs being suspended?

The Presiding Officers of the upper and lower house gave a reason for this act, stating that it was due to “unruly behavior” and disrupting proceedings after the legislators demanded a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding last week’s parliament’s security breach. Om Birla, a lower house speaker, has said that security is his responsibility and is conducting a review. He also blamed the opposition MPs for breaking the rules of the House.



Apoorvanand a political analyst said to Aljazeera the government justified the move saying that the opposition was suspended for creating a ruckus and being unruly, hindering the functioning of the parliament. He also added that the prime minister’s refusal to interact with the opposition undermines democracy which is “the dialogue between majority and minority”.

The government wants to introduce contentious bills in the parliament that were set to replace existing criminal laws without discussing them with the House’s opposition membersin.

How will the parliament function now that the lawmakers are gone?
The Parliamentary process will carry on, After opposition lawmakers are suspended, the governing party and its allies will attain the 10% quorum with an overwhelming majority. This will benefit the BJP exceptionally as the majority of the House will be on their side which will make the BJP implement new criminal laws without any hassle or any need for discourse.

What did the Prime Minister say about this situation?
PM Modi told a Hindi newspaper that the breach of parliament’s security was grave and there should be a detailed investigation into it, but “there was no need to debate this”.
What comments has the opposition made?
“Dictatorial” was the comment made by the opposition to the PM Modi government. They continue to protest “against the murder of democracy and violation of the dignity of Parliament” through silent demonstrations, Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the main opposition Congress party, on Tuesday posted on X.

Rajya Sabha member Manoj Jha also condemned the government, deeming the suspension a badge of honor. “Congratulations to Modi ji on an opposition-must [opposition-less] Parliament, Jha said
