Canada Charges 3 Men For Violent Protest Outside Hindu Temple And Sikh Gurdwara

Date:

The Peel Regional Police in Canada have arrested three men for violent demonstrations in Brampton and Mississauga outside a Hindu temple and Sikh gurdwara. A fourth man has also been arrested, and a police officer was treated for minor injuries.

Investigators said the same protesters were involved in demonstrations at two separate locations in Mississauga, Ontario following violence at the Hindu Sabha temple. The Peel Police have charged a 23-year-old man from Brampton with assault with a weapon, a 31-year-old from Mississauga with mischief, and a 43-year-old man from Mississauga for causing disturbance and assaulting a police officer.

The police highlighted that demonstrations occurred at different locations, but were related to one another. Violence was witnessed at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton where Indian consular officials were visiting. Protesters had gathered with banners highlighting support of Khalistan, and counter-protesters holding India flags

A non-governmental organization, the United Sikhs of Canada raised concerns about protests at the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Malton, Ontario. In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), the group said that the Gurdwara was stormed by armed protestors on November 3, disrupting the peaceful place of worship and violating the Sikh community’s right to assemble safely.

Jagmeet Singh, a Member of the House of Commons of Canada, said places of worship should be protected. He highlighted that de-escalation and calm must be prioritized.
