Immigrants Face Uncertainty In US Over Donald Trump’s Mass Deportation Plans

Date:

Donald Trump and his team are set to end the Biden administration’s two programs that reportedly allowed over 1.3 million immigrants to enter the US legally. Trump made promises to sweep illegal immigrants out of the United States if he became the next president.

And now that he has won the 2024 US Presidential Election, there are reports about his team already working on a plan for mass deportations and a major crackdown on illegal border crossings. This also includes ending two of the Biden administration’s programs, mainly the CBP One and the Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV) parole. However, migrants who arrived in the United States legally may be immune from deportation if they have already been granted asylum or have a legal status to stay.

These programs were a key part of President Joe Biden’s strategy to increase the number of legal pathways for migrants to enter the country. Moreover, a federal judge in the US has rejected his administration’s plans to facilitate a pathway to US citizenship for undocumented immigrants married to American citizens. He said it lacked the authority to establish the program.

But the White House is not happy saying Judge Campbell Barker’s ruling aligns with the Republican’s demands seeking to force US citizens and their families, people who have lived in the United States for more than 10 years to either separate or live in the shadows in constant fear of deportation. The Biden administration believes about half a million undocumented immigrants were eligible for the initiative.

The Department of Homeland Security expressed disappointment in the ruling saying it firmly believes ‘Keeping Families Together’ is grounded in well-established legal authority and is a fundamental American value.

Gene Hamilton, the Executive Director of America First Legal, welcomed the ruling. He said the Biden-Harris administration since day one dedicated itself to the decimation of the country’s immigration system and the erasure of borders.

Hamilton highlighted that the Republican states succeeded in stopping an illegal program that would have granted amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.
